These bushfires have been the worst in Australian History..

Tragedies abound.. Which I have spoken of and which I do not want to detract from..

However, what is happening now, lifts my spirits..

Communities – cities – states – the whole nation are joining together to do anything they can to help..  People all over the country are watching the news and thinking to themselves “What can I do?”..  There are too many volunteers  (they are having to turn people away) – too many things donated (they’ve asked for no more food or clothing) .. In the huge economic uncertainty at the moment – over $31 million dollars has been donated..  People are opening up their homes to others that have lost everything..

The Nation’s heart has been opened and it is truly uplifting..  It provides me with hope – it proves to me that we are not a people of “everyone for themselves” – we are a caring, loving people who will do everything in our power to help others..

It’s going to be a long hard road back, but, with the support of the country, it won’t be a lonely one..

More on the fires..

Death toll has crept up to over 130 and continues to rise hour by hour..  Over 750 houses destroyed..  Over 5,000 people homeless..  Towns wiped out..  A nation in disbelief as the reality begins to hit home..

The largest of the fires (over 220,000 hectares) was close to us..

My children know people who have lost their homes, one of their best friends has died..

One of my best friends knows so many people who have lost their homes and who are missing..  To hear the pain in his voice this morning was truly heartbreaking (the fires were about 200 metres from his house)..

One of my clients lost everything – and the only reason they didn’t lose their lives was because they actually built a cellar in their house and they were able to hide out there..

Every hour – more devastating news impacts us..

The latest news is that most of the fires were deliberately lit!  I wonder how they can possibly live with themselves knowing they have caused such widespread mayhem..

This morning I made my way to Yarra Glen (one of my regular jobs) – fires were still burning on three sides of this town – roads have been blocked off..  John (my client) went out to a job at a winery and ended up fighting another fire (saved the building – yay guys).  I cannot begin to tell you the total devastation of the fires – the anguish people are experiencing – everyone knows someone who has been affected..

These photos were taken by Adrienne Gilligan (the fires were about 200 metres away from them as well) – such poignant shots that tell their own story..

We are currently going through the worst bush fires Victoria has ever seen..

There are over 65 people dead and over 300,000 hectares of land burnt out..  100’s of homes have been lost..   Whole towns have been burnt to the ground..  There will be children not going to school tomorrow because their schools are no longer..

It’s frightening..

Victorian bushfires toll climbs to 36

(photo came from Yahoo 7 news)

We were placed under Urgent Threat yesterday, the girls were panicking and packed bags of their most treasured possesions – just in case we got evacuated..  I tried to get them to look at it as an adventure – that if the house burnt down – it was only stuff that was going – and stuff can be replaced..  So long as we were together and safe – everything would be fine..  We couldn’t see 10 metres in front of the house at one stage – the smoke was just so intense..  When it got dark – we could see the red glow of the fires..

Some of the fires are still out of control, even though we have had a cool change come through..  My heart goes out to everyone who has been touched by these fires..  From the people fighting them – to the families that have lost loved ones and all their possessions..

And to think that some of these fires have been deliberately lit!
