Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word happy would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness. It is far better to take things as they come along with patience and equanimity.

Carl Jung
There is a story told in my meditation practice: (here is the abbreviated version): A man dies and he has 2 sons. The elder son is in charge of the distribution of the father’s things amongst himself and his brother. There are several rings, one very plane and 2 studded with gemstones. The greedy elder brother decides that he is to keep the 2 more expensive rings while giving his younger brother the very plane simple ring.
The older brother experiences deep sadness and anger as he gains and loses fortune, as one wife and a child die.
The younger brother discovers a description on the inside of the simple ring. “This too shall pass.” Ahhhhh, he thinks to himself, very important words from my father, a very wise man. So, when the seasons of his life arise and pass, he looks upon them, and in his heart he knows that “this too shall pass.” And his life, like that, goes on and on is quiet simplistic happiness.
How beautiful..
It sounds so flip to say “this is so true” but man, “this is so true.” Sorry, couldn’t help myself. Beautiful.
